About Kuldiga town
Kuldīga is an medieval town in Latvia's western region of Kurzeme with distinctive architecture, which is included in the list of the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Saint Catherine is believed to be the patron saint of Kuldīga, and the oldest church of the town is named after St Catherine. The foundation of the building was laid as early as in 1252. The church has been remodeled a number of times. The small River Alekšupīte runs through the very centre of the Kuldīga old town, along the walls of the houses. That is a reason why sometimes this town is called "Latvian Venice". The Old Town around the small river itself is remaining 17th–18th-century ensemble of town. The Venta Rapid or Venta Waterfall is about 240 meters wide natural rapid the widest in Europe. Not far from the rapid is the Kuldīga brick bridge built in 1874, which is one of the longest bridge of this type in Europe. In the year 2007 Kuldiga was recognized as an European Destination of Excellence (EDEN). .

Kuldiga town is about 150 km away from Riga, but it is not boring to go there because there are several stop-overs on the way. The first stop on this tour is the Jaunmoku Hunting Palace. Thanks to the well-preserved historical center of the city, buildings, street layout, geography, Kuldiga is also chosen as a filming location by foreign film studios. About 30 films have been shot in Kuldīga and the surroundings of Kuldīga - both documentaries and feature films. "Mosfilm" film studio filmed J. Bondarev's novel "The Shore" (1983), "Invincible" by Werner Herzog (2001), "The Bridge" by Wolfgang Panzer (2008), "Effie Briest" (2009) and others.
