Bogs, marshes and wetlands represent some of the most fascinating and biodiverse ecosystems on our planet. These environments, characterized by high humidity and unique soil conditions,A bog is a wetland that originally started as a lake. Over thousands of years, plants slowly grew and accumulated. Because they lacked oxygen and time to fully decompose, the plant matter piled up into what we now call peat. As a result, a bog is neither fully land nor fully water — it is a spongy mixture of both.
Walking on peat feels soft and bouncy, almost like stepping on a soaked mattress. While it is possible to walk through a bog, there is always a risk of sinking knee-deep. This is exactly why bog shoes exist — wide, ski-like footwear that spreads your weight and makes movement much easier.

Bogshoeing (snowshoeing) have been used to walk on wetlands throughout the times. This footwear allows us access to the places on the bogs where it is hard or even impossible to reach by foot. Learning about bog species, watching the birds, maybe even some mammals. It is possible to find berries. In winter time, the bogs are covered with ice.
Our Bog Shoes Hiking place are located about 30 km from Riga in Kemeri National Park. This experience is only available with a guide, and a bogshoe tour takes about 4 hours including transfer. The walking distance in Bog 4-6 km. You will be provided with Bogshoes, but You should have Your own rubber boats or waterproof hiking boots also in Summer time. Bog shoes are fastened to the ankle of the boots. With experienced guide this activity is safe. Carefully follow the guide’s instructions. Enjoy
